  • General Info

    Axalin® Expectorant is manufactured by Cipla. This syrup contains Ambroxol, Terbutaline, and Guaiphenesin as active ingredients. Axalin® Expectorant is used to relieve the symptoms of air passages (bronchi) and lungs (pulmonary) diseases. Equally effective for productive and unproductive cough.

    Axalin® Expectorant is indicated to relieve a cough caused by following conditions:

    - bronchopulmonary disorders (bronchitis, bronchial asthma, emphysema, etc.) associated with bronchial spasm, mucoid impaction, and problems of expectoration;

    - upper respiratory tract infections (epiglottitis , laryngitis, laryngotracheitis, and tracheitis);

    - respiratory tract inflammation (tracheobronchitis);

    - allergic reactions (e. g., to a change of season or to pets’ dander, skin flakes, saliva, and urine).

    The combination of Ambroxol, Terbutaline, and Guaiphenesin also can be used to treat cough occuring due to active or passive smoking.

    MOA (mechanism of action):

    Ambroxol is a mucoactive drug with secretolytic and secretomotoric properties. It inhibits the Nitric oxide-depending activation of soluble guanylate cyclase associated with inflammation and other disturbances of airways function. Therefore, Ambroxol renews the clearing mechanisms of the respiratory tract which play an important role in the body’s natural defense against infections. It also reduces the adhesion of mucus to the bronchial walls enhancing the protection against irritating agents.

    Terbutaline is a selective beta-2 adrenergic agonist with bronchodilatory and tocolytic properties. It is thought to act through increasing the inner levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (c-AMP), important biological messengers. Increased c-AMP levels result in the relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle and inhibition of inflammatory mediators.

    Guaiphenesin is an expectorant which promotes the secretion of sputum (a mixture of saliva and mucus) by the air passages reducing adhesiveness and surface tension. It makes a cough more productive, but less recurrent. Then Guaiphenesin removes the accumulated secretions from the upper and lower airway. It also thought to have certain muscle relaxing properties.

    Axalin® Expectorant should be taken by mouth.

    The exact dosage as well as course duration should be indicated by your doctor.
